Instead of having dinner, why not drive to a Birmingham (ex-)council estate and have a jog around in the dark? Difficult to refuse such an invitation, so there I was at quarter to seven, collecting my map.

John Embrey’s map is excellent, and so was the course. Short legs (=sections of the course) at first, getting longer as the brain and legs (=lower limbs) got tireder. Castle Vale is a great area for orienteering: it’s dead flat, and there’s an intricate path network. I didn’t make any mistakes and got round the short course (4.5k) in 40 minutes.
