Now and again I browse Ebay for items related to my various interests, including orienteering. Unfortunately the map measurer I bought doesn’t work, but I was much luckier with an old book I splashed out £2 on: “The Sport of Orienteering” published by Silva Canada in 1948.

The sport portrayed in the book is pretty different from the one we know today, and I’ll gradually scan in the pages. To whet your appetite, here’s most of the photos from the book. The captions are more interesting than the photos themselves, for instance:

“For all independent and enterprising people, this is the sport of sports.”

“Orienteering makes young people healthy and hardy; it fortifies their heart and lungs, gives colour to their cheeks, and steels their will.”
